Celebrating National Arts in Education Week

The Kennedy Center and Washington National Opera are happy to celebrate #artsedweek! In fact, we celebrate and advocate for arts in education every day of the week, knowing how this knowledge fosters confidence, critical thinking, and creativity in our students. The Kennedy Center’s Education Department develops and facilitates a variety of arts programs, including Kids Create Opera. This innovative program uses the year-long project of creating an original opera to approach standard elementary school objectives and subject areas. The program excels in the areas of student engagement, building community, integrating SEL skills, and serving all types of learners. And it all begins with a free professional development seminar for teachers! This past August, educators from four local elementary schools went “back to school” themselves, learned the curriculum, and collaborated to create their own opera! They now have the learning tools to bring back to their classrooms to let their “Kids Create Opera.”
